Use this roof calculator to easily estimate the number of shingles you will need for your roofing project.
Roof Shingle Calculator
Use this calculator to estimate the number of shingle bundles required for your roof.
How to Use:
- Enter the length and width of your roof in feet.
- Select the slope of your roof from the dropdown menu.
- Enter the coverage area of one bundle of shingles in square feet.
- Click “Calculate” to get the estimated number of shingle bundles required.
Calculation Method:
The calculator multiplies the length and width to determine the base area of the roof, then applies a slope factor to adjust for the slope of the roof. The total roof area is divided by the coverage area of a single bundle of shingles to determine the number of bundles required. We use the ceiling function to round up since you can’t purchase a fraction of a bundle.
Limitations:
This calculator assumes a simple rectangular roof and does not account for waste, irregularities, or complex roof shapes. Always consult with a professional for precise measurements and estimations.
Use Cases for This Calculator
Calculate Roof Area
Enter the dimensions of your roof to determine the total area to be covered with shingles. You can easily calculate the area of each section of your roof, including dormers and slopes, all in one place.
Select Shingle Size
Choose the size of the shingles you plan to use on your roof. Whether you prefer standard 3-tab shingles or architectural shingles, you can select the appropriate size and style for your project.
Estimate Shingles Needed
Based on your roof area and the selected shingle size, the calculator will provide you with an estimate of how many shingles you will need. This ensures you purchase the right quantity for a successful installation.
Calculate Waste Factor
Factor in the waste percentage during the installation process to ensure you have enough shingles. The calculator accounts for common waste factors to give you a more accurate estimate of the total shingle count needed.
Account for Pitch Angle
Input the pitch angle of your roof to adjust for a more accurate shingle count. Different pitch angles may require more shingles to cover the same area, and the calculator helps you make this necessary adjustment.
Include Ridge Cap Shingles
Don’t forget to add ridge cap shingles for a complete roofing project. The calculator accounts for the additional shingles needed for the ridge line, ensuring you have everything necessary for a finished look.
Calculate Total Cost
Once you have the shingle count and additional materials estimated, the calculator can provide you with a total cost for your roofing project. This includes shingles, ridge caps, and any other required supplies.
Compare Shingle Options
If you’re undecided between different shingle styles or sizes, the calculator allows you to input and compare various options. You can see how different choices affect the total shingle count and cost before making a decision.
Adjust for Roof Features
If your roof has unique features like skylights or chimneys, you can adjust the calculations accordingly. The calculator helps you accommodate these features by factoring in their area and the necessary shingles.
Print or Save Results
After completing your calculations, you can easily print or save the results for future reference. This allows you to have a detailed breakdown of your roof project requirements on hand as you move forward with the installation process.
