Gas Usage Estimator – Calculate Your Costs

This tool helps you estimate the gas usage for your trips.

Gas Usage Estimator

This gas usage estimator calculates the total fuel needed, total cost, and total travel time for a specified trip.

How to Use

  • Enter the distance in miles.
  • Enter your vehicle’s fuel efficiency in miles per gallon (MPG).
  • Enter the current fuel cost per gallon in dollars.
  • Enter the number of passengers in the vehicle.
  • Enter the total weight of the luggage in pounds.
  • Enter the estimated time spent on extra stops in hours.
  • Click the “Calculate” button to see the estimated total fuel needed, total cost, and total travel time.

How it Calculates

The estimator first calculates the adjusted MPG of the vehicle by taking into account the weight of the luggage, which slightly reduces the MPG. It then calculates the total fuel needed for the trip by dividing the distance by the adjusted MPG. The total cost is calculated by multiplying the total fuel needed by the fuel cost per gallon. The total time is calculated by dividing the distance by an average speed of 60 mph and adding the extra stop time.

Limitations

  • The calculation assumes a constant average speed of 60 mph, which may not be accurate for all trips.
  • The weight penalty is a rough estimate and may not accurately reflect the impact on fuel efficiency.
  • The estimator does not take into account factors such as road conditions, traffic, and vehicle condition.
