How to Use the JHU Estimator Calculator

This calculator helps you estimate the future value of your investments with regular monthly contributions. To use this calculator, follow these steps:

  1. Enter the initial amount of money you are investing in the “Initial Amount” field.
  2. Enter the amount of money you plan to invest every month in the “Monthly Contribution” field.
  3. Enter the expected annual interest rate (as a percentage) in the “Annual Interest Rate” field.
  4. Enter the number of years you plan to keep the investment in the “Number of Years” field.
  5. Click the “Calculate” button to see the estimated future value of your investment.

How the Calculator Works

The calculator uses the future value formula to compute the total investment value over time. The formula takes into account the initial amount, monthly contributions, the interest rate, and the number of periods (years converted to months). The future value is calculated using the following steps:

  1. The initial amount grows based on the monthly interest rate for the total number of months.
  2. Each monthly contribution is added, and it also grows based on the number of months it is invested.

The formula used is: Future Value = P * (1 + r/n)^(nt) + M * (((1 + r/n)^(nt) – 1) / (r/n)) where P is the initial amount, M is the monthly contribution, r is the annual interest rate, n is the number of compounding periods per year (12 for monthly), and t is the number of years.

Limitations

Please note the following limitations of this calculator:

  • The calculator assumes that the monthly contributions are made at the end of each month.
  • The results are based on the specified interest rate, which can vary depending on market conditions and other factors.
  • The calculator does not account for taxes, fees, or other costs associated with investments.
