How to Use

This fuel estimator helps calculate the total fuel cost for a trip, including when shared among a number of people and accounting for a return trip.

Instructions:

  1. Enter the total distance of your trip in miles.
  2. Enter your vehicle’s fuel efficiency in miles per gallon (MPG).
  3. Enter the current cost of fuel in pounds per litre (£/litre).
  4. If the fuel cost is to be shared, enter the number of people sharing the cost.
  5. If the trip is a return trip, check the “Return Trip” checkbox.
  6. Click the “Calculate” button to see the results.

Calculation Method:

The total fuel required is calculated by converting the trip distance to the equivalent amount of fuel in liters using the formula: (distance in miles / vehicle MPG) * 4.54609.
The fuel cost is then calculated by multiplying this value by the given cost of fuel per liter.
Finally, if the costs are to be shared, the total fuel cost is divided by the number of people sharing the cost.

Limitations:

  • This calculator assumes constant fuel efficiency and cost per liter throughout the trip.
  • Fuel consumption might vary based on driving conditions, and this is not accounted for.
  • The calculator does not account for variations in fuel efficiency between city and highway driving.
