Explanation of Calculation

The calorie calculator uses the Harris-Benedict equation to estimate your basal metabolic rate (BMR), which is the amount of energy expended while at rest. Your BMR is then multiplied by the selected activity factor to give your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE).

The formula to calculate BMR is:

  • For males: BMR = 88.362 + (13.397 * weight in kg) + (4.799 * height in cm) – (5.677 * age in years)
  • For females: BMR = 447.593 + (9.247 * weight in kg) + (3.098 * height in cm) – (4.330 * age in years)

The activity factors are:

  • 1.2: Sedentary (little or no exercise)
  • 1.375: Lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week)
  • 1.55: Moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week)
  • 1.725: Very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week)
  • 1.9: Super active (very hard exercise/sports & physical job or 2x training)

Based on your TDEE, the calculator also provides calorie recommendations for weight loss and weight gain. For weight loss, a 500-calorie deficit from maintenance is used, and for weight gain, a 500-calorie surplus is used.

Limitations

While this calculator provides a good estimate of your daily calorie needs, it is not perfect. It does not account for differences in muscle mass, metabolic rate, or other individual variances. Always consult with a healthcare provider or a nutritionist for personalized advice.
