This tool helps you estimate the Average Delay (AVD) and Round-Trip Time (RTT) for network communications.







How to Use the AVD RTT Estimator

To use this Accurate RTT (Round Trip Time) Estimator, please follow these steps:

  1. Enter a value for Alpha (α). It should be between 0.01 and 1. This is the weight given to the latest sample RTT compared to previous estimated RTT.
  2. Enter the current Sample RTT. This is the most recent round trip time you have measured.
  3. Enter the Previous Estimated RTT. This is the last calculated estimated RTT value.
  4. Click the Calculate button to get the new estimated RTT.

Calculation Process:

The Estimator calculates the new estimated RTT using the formula:

Estimated RTT = (1 - α) * Previous RTT + α * Sample RTT

Alpha (α): a smoothing factor, in the range 0 < α ≤ 1.

Sample RTT: the current measured round-trip time.

Previous Estimated RTT: the last estimated RTT value.

Limitations:

This calculation is dependent on the accuracy of the input values:

  • If the alpha value is too high, the estimated RTT becomes very similar to the last measured RTT which may result in less smoothing.
  • If the alpha value is too low, the estimated RTT changes very slowly, making it less responsive to actual network conditions.
  • Values outside the allowed input ranges may produce invalid results or errors.
