How to Use the Calorie Gain Calculator
Follow these steps to use the calorie gain calculator:
- Fill in your weight in kilograms.
- Enter your height in centimeters.
- Provide your age in years.
- Select your gender.
- Choose your activity level from the dropdown menu.
- Click the “Calculate” button to see your results.
How It Calculates the Results
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation to calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is the number of calories your body needs at rest to maintain your weight. The formula is different for men and women:
- For men: BMR = 10 * weight (kg) + 6.25 * height (cm) – 5 * age (years) + 5
- For women: BMR = 10 * weight (kg) + 6.25 * height (cm) – 5 * age (years) – 161
We then multiply your BMR by an activity factor that reflects your daily physical activity level:
- Sedentary (little to no exercise): BMR * 1.2
- Lightly active (light exercise 1-3 days per week): BMR * 1.375
- Moderately active (moderate exercise 3-5 days per week): BMR * 1.55
- Very active (hard exercise 6-7 days per week): BMR * 1.725
- Super active (very hard exercise, physical job, or training twice a day): BMR * 1.9
The maintenance calories reflect the caloric intake needed to maintain your current weight based on your BMR and activity level. To gain weight, we add a caloric surplus (typically 500 kcal per day).
