How the Calculator Works

The calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation to calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is the number of calories your body needs to perform basic functions. The equation is as follows:

  • For males: BMR = (10 * weight) + (6.25 * height) – (5 * age) + 5
  • For females: BMR = (10 * weight) + (6.25 * height) – (5 * age) – 161

Your BMR is then multiplied by an activity factor that represents your daily activity level to estimate your maintenance calories. The activity factors are:

  • Sedentary: BMR * 1.2
  • Lightly active: BMR * 1.375
  • Moderately active: BMR * 1.55
  • Very active: BMR * 1.725
  • Super active: BMR * 1.9

Finally, your goal calories are calculated by adjusting your maintenance calories based on your weight goal (losing, maintaining, or gaining weight).
