How to Use the Calorie Calculator

To use the calorie calculator, fill in the following information:

  • Gender: Select your gender.
  • Age: Enter your age in years.
  • Height: Enter your height in centimeters.
  • Weight: Enter your weight in kilograms.
  • Activity Level: Select your daily activity level.

After entering your information, click the “Calculate” button. The calculator will provide you with an estimate of your Maintenance Calories (the number of calories you need to maintain your current weight), Calories for Weight Loss, and Calories for Weight Gain.

Explanation of Calculations

The calorie calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation to estimate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is the number of calories your body needs to perform basic functions such as breathing, circulating blood, and cell production. This equation is different for men and women:

  • For men: BMR = 88.362 + (13.397 * weight in kg) + (4.799 * height in cm) – (5.677 * age in years)
  • For women: BMR = 447.593 + (9.247 * weight in kg) + (3.098 * height in cm) – (4.330 * age in years)

The calculator then adjusts your BMR based on your activity level to estimate your Maintenance Calories. It also adjusts this value by adding or subtracting 500 calories to provide estimates for weight gain and weight loss.

Limitations

While this calculator uses widely accepted equations and factors to estimate your caloric needs, it may not be 100% accurate for everyone. Individual variations such as muscle mass, metabolic anomalies, and specific health conditions can affect your actual caloric needs. Use this calculator as a guideline, and consult a healthcare or nutrition professional for personalized advice.
