How to Use the Calorie Calculator
To use the calorie calculator, fill in the fields with your weight, height, age, gender, activity level and goal. Once you have filled in all the fields, click on the “Calculate” button. The calculator will then display your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), and Target Caloric Intake.
How It Calculates the Results
The calculator first computes the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) using the Harris-Benedict Equation. Based on your gender, the equation is as follows:
- For men: BMR = 10 * weight (kg) + 6.25 * height (cm) – 5 * age (years) + 5
- For women: BMR = 10 * weight (kg) + 6.25 * height (cm) – 5 * age (years) – 161
This BMR represents the number of calories your body needs to perform basic life-sustaining functions.
The calculator then multiplies the BMR by an activity level multiplier to get the Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). The multipliers are:
- Sedentary (little or no exercise): 1.2
- Lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days a week): 1.375
- Moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days a week): 1.55
- Very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week): 1.725
- Extra active (very hard exercise/sports & a physical job): 1.9
The resulting TDEE represents how many calories you need to maintain your current weight based on your lifestyle.
Finally, the calculator adjusts the TDEE based on your goal:
- Maintain weight: No change to TDEE
- Lose weight: Subtract 500 calories from TDEE
- Gain weight: Add 500 calories to TDEE
