How to Use the Calorie Calculator

This calorie calculator helps you estimate your daily caloric needs based on your age, gender, weight, height, and activity level. Follow these steps to use the calculator:

  1. Enter your age in years.
  2. Select your gender.
  3. Enter your weight in kilograms.
  4. Enter your height in centimeters.
  5. Select your activity level from the dropdown menu.
  6. Click the “Calculate” button to see your estimated daily caloric needs.

How the Calculator Works

The calculator uses the Harris-Benedict equation to estimate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is the number of calories your body needs at rest. Based on your activity level, the calculator then estimates your total daily calorie requirements. The Harris-Benedict equation takes the following form:

  • For men: BMR = 88.362 + (13.397 × weight in kg) + (4.799 × height in cm) – (5.677 × age in years)
  • For women: BMR = 447.593 + (9.247 × weight in kg) + (3.098 × height in cm) – (4.330 × age in years)

To determine your daily caloric needs, your BMR is multiplied by an activity factor that represents your typical level of physical activity:

  • Sedentary (little or no exercise): BMR × 1.2
  • Lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week): BMR × 1.375
  • Moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week): BMR × 1.55
  • Very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week): BMR × 1.725
  • Super active (very hard exercise/sports and a physical job): BMR × 1.9
