How to Use the Calorie Deficit Calculator

To use this calculator, follow these steps:

  1. Enter your age in the ‘Age’ field.
  2. Enter your weight in kilograms in the ‘Weight’ field.
  3. Enter your height in centimeters in the ‘Height’ field.
  4. Select your gender from the ‘Gender’ dropdown menu.
  5. Choose your activity level from the ‘Activity Level’ dropdown menu.
  6. Select your goal from the ‘Goal’ dropdown menu. You can choose to lose weight (mild or moderate deficit), maintain weight, or gain weight (mild or moderate surplus).
  7. Click the ‘Calculate’ button. Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), and recommended daily caloric intake will be displayed in the ‘Results’ section.

Explanation of Calculations

The calculator works by calculating your BMR, which is the number of calories your body needs to maintain its basic functions at rest. The formula for BMR differs based on gender:

  • For females: BMR = 655 + (9.6 × weight in kg) + (1.8 × height in cm) – (4.7 × age in years)
  • For males: BMR = 66 + (13.7 × weight in kg) + (5 × height in cm) – (6.8 × age in years)

Your TDEE is then calculated by multiplying your BMR by an activity factor that corresponds to your selected activity level:

  • Sedentary: BMR × 1.2
  • Lightly active: BMR × 1.375
  • Moderately active: BMR × 1.55
  • Very active: BMR × 1.725
  • Super active: BMR × 1.9

Finally, based on your selected goal, a caloric increase or decrease is applied to your TDEE to arrive at the recommended daily caloric intake:

  • Mild deficit: TDEE – 250 calories
  • Moderate deficit: TDEE – 500 calories
  • Weight maintenance: TDEE
  • Mild surplus: TDEE + 250 calories
  • Moderate surplus: TDEE + 500 calories

Limitations

Please note that this calculator provides an estimate based on mathematical formulas and generalized activity factors.
