How It Calculates Results

The calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation, which is one of the most accurate formulas for calculating Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). BMR represents the number of calories you’d burn if you were at rest all day.

For men, the equation is:
BMR = (10 * weight in kg) + (6.25 * height in cm) – (5 * age in years) + 5

For women, the equation is:
BMR = (10 * weight in kg) + (6.25 * height in cm) – (5 * age in years) – 161

The resultant BMR is then multiplied by an activity factor to give the total daily calorie needs:

  • Sedentary (little or no exercise): BMR * 1.2
  • Lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days a week): BMR * 1.375
  • Moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days a week): BMR * 1.55
  • Very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week): BMR * 1.725
  • Super active (hard exercise/sports & physical job): BMR * 1.9
