Dirt Calculator: Estimate Soil Volume for Your Project

This dirt calculator tool will help you determine the amount of soil you’ll need for your gardening or landscaping project.

Dirt Calculator

This Dirt Calculator is designed to help you estimate the amount of dirt needed for your outdoor projects. Simply enter the dimensions of the area you need to fill with dirt: the length and the width in feet, and the depth in inches.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter the length (in feet) of the area you want to cover with dirt.
  2. Enter the width (in feet) of the area.
  3. Enter the desired depth of the dirt layer (in inches).
  4. Click the ‘Calculate’ button.
  5. The calculator will display the result in cubic yards.

How It Calculates

The calculator determines the volume of dirt needed by multiplying the length by the width by the depth. The depth is first converted from inches to feet by dividing by 12. The resulting volume in cubic feet is then converted to cubic yards since dirt is usually sold by the cubic yard. One cubic yard is equal to 27 cubic feet.

Limitations

Please note that this calculator assumes the area is a perfect rectangle or square and that the depth of dirt needed is consistent throughout the area. Complex shapes or varying depths will require manual calculation or professional assistance for a more accurate estimation.
