How to use the Greenhouse Heating Cost Calculator

This calculator helps estimate the heating cost for your greenhouse based on various parameters:

  • Width, Length, Height: Dimensions of your greenhouse in meters.
  • Desired Indoor Temperature: The temperature you want inside the greenhouse.
  • Outdoor Temperature: The average outdoor temperature.
  • Insulation Factor: A number from 1 (poorly insulated) to 10 (well-insulated).
  • Fuel Cost per kWh: Cost of heating fuel per kilowatt-hour in dollars.
  • Average Heating Hours per Day: The average number of hours you expect to use heating per day.

Calculation Method

The volume of the greenhouse is calculated as the product of Width, Length, and Height. The heat loss per hour is determined with the formula:

Heat Loss Per Hour = Volume x k-value x Temperature Difference

The k-value depends on the insulation factor. It is assumed to be 0.04 plus 0.01 times the insulation factor value. The total daily heat loss is calculated by multiplying the hourly loss with the average heating hours per day. Finally, the daily cost is calculated by multiplying the daily heat loss by the fuel cost per kilowatt-hour.

Limitations

This calculator provides an estimate based on the input parameters. Real-world factors such as variations in temperature, wind speed, greenhouse material, and other environmental conditions are not taken into account. For a more comprehensive analysis, professional consultation is recommended.
