Landscape Rock Calculator: Estimate Your Project Needs

Calculate the amount of landscape rock you need based on area dimensions and depth with this easy-to-use tool.

How to Use the Landscape Rock Calculator

To use this calculator, input the length and width of the area in feet, the depth of the rock in inches, and the density of the rock in pounds per cubic foot (the default is 100 lbs/cubic ft). Click “Calculate” to find out how many tons of landscape rock you’ll need.

How It Calculates the Results

The calculator converts the input dimensions into cubic feet, applies the rock density to determine the weight in pounds, and then converts that weight into tons. The formula used is:
Tonnage = (Length * Width * (Depth / 12) * Density) / 2000
Where length, width, and depth are the input dimensions in feet, inches, and feet respectively, density is rock density in lbs per cubic foot, and 2000 lbs = 1 ton.

Limitations

This calculator assumes that the area to be covered is a perfect rectangle and that the depth is uniform across the entire area. Real-world conditions such as irregular shapes, sloping terrain, and varying depth could affect the actual amount of rock needed.
