This OSM Calorie Calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation to estimate your basal metabolic rate (BMR) and then applies an activity factor to determine your total daily calorie needs.

About the Calculation

The Mifflin-St Jeor Equation for BMR is as follows:

  • For men: BMR = 10 * weight (kg) + 6.25 * height (cm) – 5 * age (y) + 5
  • For women: BMR = 10 * weight (kg) + 6.25 * height (cm) – 5 * age (y) – 161

An activity factor is applied to this BMR to estimate total daily calorie needs:

  • Sedentary (little or no exercise): BMR * 1.2
  • Lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week): BMR * 1.375
  • Moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week): BMR * 1.55
  • Active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week): BMR * 1.725
  • Very active (very hard exercise/physical job): BMR * 1.9

Limitations
