How to Use the Paint Calculator
To use the paint calculator, simply enter the width and height of the space you wish to paint in feet, as well as the number of coats you plan on applying. Press ‘Calculate’ to determine how many gallons of paint you will need.
How it Calculates
The calculator multiplies the width by the height to find the total square footage. It then multiplies this figure by the number of coats to get the total square footage needed to be covered. Most paint cans cover approximately 350 square feet per gallon, so the calculator divides the total square footage by 350 and rounds up to the nearest whole number to determine the number of gallons required.
Limitations of the Calculator
The calculator assumes a smooth surface and does not take into account texture or paint absorption rates. It’s based on the average coverage per gallon, which can vary between paint brands and types. Always check the paint can for exact coverage and consider purchasing a small extra amount to account for any errors or additional coats.
