Plank Flooring Layout Calculator – Optimize Your Flooring

This tool will calculate the number of planks you need to cover your floor area.

How to Use the Plank Flooring Layout Calculator

To use this calculator, please follow the steps below:

  1. Enter the length and width of the room in feet.
  2. Enter the length and width of each plank in inches.
  3. Optionally, enter the wastage percentage you want to account for. The default value is 5%.
  4. Click the “Calculate” button.
  5. The number of planks required will be displayed in the “Result” field.

How It Works

This calculator takes the dimensions of the room and the planks you wish to use, calculates the total area of the room, and then determines the number of planks needed based on their area. It also allows for a wastage percentage to account for cut-offs and mistakes.

Formulas Used:

  • Total Room Area (sq ft) = Room Length (ft) * Room Width (ft)
  • Total Plank Area (sq ft) = Plank Length (in) * Plank Width (in) / 144
  • Total Planks Needed = (Total Room Area / Total Plank Area) * (1 + Wastage Percentage / 100)

Limitations

The calculator assumes a simple rectangular room and does not account for odd-shaped rooms or areas with obstacles like columns and stairs. It also assumes uniform plank sizes and does not factor in varying plank lengths or widths.

Use Cases for This Calculator

Calculate Number of Planks Required

Enter the length and width of the room, as well as the plank length and width, to calculate the number of planks needed for the floor. The calculator will instantly provide you with the total count for efficient planning and purchasing.

Determine Plank Orientation

Input the room’s dimensions and the preferred plank layout direction (horizontal or vertical) to visualize and decide the best orientation. This feature allows you to see how the planks will align with the room’s design before installation.

Estimate Wastage Percentage

Specify the wastage percentage you want to account for during installation to generate the exact quantity of planks needed, including the additional amount for cuts and mistakes. This ensures you have enough material for the project.

Explore Herringbone Pattern

Select the herringbone pattern option and input the room’s dimensions to see how the planks will form the classic design. You can adjust the angle and visualize the stunning layout with accurate plank calculations.

Calculate Total Square Footage

Simply input the length and width of the room to calculate the total square footage required for the flooring project. This quick calculation helps in estimating the overall cost and material needed.

Adjust for Room Shape

If the room has an irregular shape or features, input the specific measurements to customize the plank layout calculation accordingly. The calculator will adapt to the room’s unique dimensions for accurate results.

Compare Different Plank Sizes

Experiment with various plank lengths and widths to compare how they impact the overall layout and quantity needed. This allows you to find the most cost-effective and visually appealing option for your project.

Optimize for Border Planks

Specify the width of border planks desired around the room and let the calculator adjust the layout accordingly. This feature helps in creating a visually pleasing border design without any guesswork.

Calculate Cost Estimates

Input the price per square foot of the plank flooring to receive an instant cost estimate for the entire project. This feature helps you budget and plan the expenses before starting the installation process.

Save and Print Results

After calculating the plank layout details, save or print the results for future reference or sharing with contractors. This feature enables you to have a convenient record of the calculations for a seamless flooring installation process.
