How to Use the Rating Estimator

This USCF rating estimator helps you estimate your new chess rating based on your current rating, the ratings of your opponents, and the scores you achieved against them in your games.

Steps to Use the Calculator:

  1. Enter your current start rating in the “Start Rating” field.
  2. Enter the number of opponents you played against in the “Number of Opponents” field.
  3. For each opponent, enter their rating and the score you achieved against them. Press “Add Opponent” to add more opponent fields.
  4. Click the “Calculate” button to see your new estimated rating.

Explanation of the Calculation:

The calculator uses the standard Elo rating formula. For each opponent, it calculates the expected score based on the rating difference between you and your opponent. The formula used for expected score is:

E = 1 / (1 + 10 ^ ((Opponent Rating - Start Rating) / 400))

The actual score is then compared to the expected score, and the rating adjustment is made based on the difference. A win adds more points, losing reduces points, and drawing adds half of what a win would add or subtract. The total score is compared to your expected score, and your rating is updated accordingly.

Limitations:

This calculator provides an estimated rating and may not be identical to the official rating calculated by the USCF. Factors such as the rating floor, number of games played, and provisional ratings are not considered in this simple model.
