This tool helps you calculate the number of shingles needed for your roofing project based on your roof’s measurements.
How to Use the Shingle Calculator
To use this shingle calculator, enter the length and width of your roof in feet, as well as the pitch of your roof. Then click the “Calculate” button to see the result. The result will display the number of squares of shingles needed to cover your roof.
How It Calculates the Results
The calculator uses the following formula to estimate the number of shingles required:
- Length: Enter the total length of your roof in feet.
- Width: Enter the total width of your roof in feet.
- Pitch: Enter the roof pitch. This is the rise per 12 inches (e.g., a 6/12 pitch means that the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal distance).
The roof area is calculated using the formula: Length x Width x sqrt(1 + (Pitch/12)^2)
. The total square footage is then divided by 100 to determine the number of squares of shingles needed, assuming one square of shingles covers 100 square feet.
Limitations
This calculator provides an estimate based on the input values. For complex roof geometries or large projects, it is recommended to consult a professional for a more accurate calculation. Additionally, waste factor and extra shingles for hips, ridges, and valleys are not included in this calculation.
